Usama Alnassar, a Syrian Master Sculptor and Painter.
Born in Damascus, Syria, into a family with a rich artistic tradition.
Opened the AlNassar Atelier in Carrara where he holds marble sculpture courses for international students.
Lives in Carrara, Italy.

What is your relationship to your studio? What does your studio represent to you? How do you feel when you are in your studio?

For me, the studio is like a garden full of wonderful toys. I love to be there, it makes me feel as free as a child.

My real studio is inside me, so, wherever I go I always have it within me.

Do the layout, the organization and the location of your studio have an influence on the creation of your works? What role do that space, time and solitude have on your work?

When I am in Carrara, I am fully absorbed by the “magic” of the marble, since my studio is situated between two marble quarries. When I happen to change my location, materials and circumstances, this affects my artistic form and my expression.

Do you listen to music in your studio? Do you work better with some music in your ear or do you need complete silence when you are at your most creative?

I love listening to good music, especially to classical music.

Why did you build a theatre at your studio?

The theatre is a Noah’s Ark for culture and human expression in a world that is flooded with conflicts and problems.

What your art is about?

My work is a reflection of how I feel about this world full of love and hate, need and desire, travel and migration, and also about our relationship to the digital world.

Being an artist is hard work. Do you have sometimes doubts and struggles?

Painting and sculpting do not feel like work to me.

Where does your energy come from?

My creative energy comes from my instinctive need for beauty and expression.

Has the conflict that is raging in Syria since a few years had an impact on the core element of your art? What has changed?

This human disaster is the loss of culture; this is what gives me a reason to keep going as an artist.

I talk about it through many of my works that are about the search for identity: ‘Messages’, ‘Woman Icon’, ‘The Caravan’, ‘People Living in Bubbles’, ‘Freedom of Speech’ and ‘The 40 v’.

If you are living outside of Syria, has the place you are living in changed your art?

It certainly has, yet I am not sure in which ways. I would say that the encounters I made with other people, and learning other languages have opened up my mind in giving more liberty to my feelings for other ideologies and nationalities. This all has opened me up to see more of humanity.

What are your hopes and dreams for yourself as an artist and especially as a Syrian artist?

I live my hopes and my dreams intrinsically through my sculptures and my paintings; they are one and the same.

ما علاقتك مع الاستوديو؟ ماذا تمثل لك هذه الورشة الفنية؟ و ما هو إحساسك عندما تكون داخلها؟

الورشة بالنسبة لي هي كحديقة مملوءة بالألعاب، أحب وجودي فيها و أشعر بالحرية كالأطفال.

لكن ورشتي الحقيقية موجودة في داخلي، فأينما ذهبتُ ترافقني.

هل تنظيم او فوضوية الورشة تؤثر على عملك؟ هل محيط الورشة، مكانها و المسافة بينها و بين مكان إقامتك تؤثر على نتائج عملك؟ ما هو دور هذا المكان و الوحدة و الوقت في فنك؟

عندما أكون في كارارا أكون مأخوذاً كلياً بالرخام، فورشتي تقع بين مقلعين، لكن عندما أغير المكان، الأدوات و الظروف ينعكس ذلك على أعمالي شكلاً و مضموناً.   

هل تستمع الى الموسيقى في ورشة عملك؟ هل تفضل العمل في السكون أم أن نوع الموسيقى التي قد تسمعها قد تؤثّر على ابداعك؟

أحب سماع الموسيقى الجيدة، و خصوصاً الموسيقى الكلاسيكية.

لماذا بنيت مسرحاً في ورشتك؟ 

هذا المسرح كسفينة نوح للثقافة و الفن و التعبير الإنساني في عالم غارق في المشاكل و الحروب.

عن ماذا يريد ان يعبّر فنك؟

أعمالي هي انعكاس لشعوري تجاه عالمنا هذا المليء بالحب و الكراهية، بالمبادىء و الرغبات، السفر و الهجرة… فني يتحدث أيضاً عن علاقتنا بعالم المعلوماتية.

 من أين تأتي طاقتك الفنية و حماسك للعمل؟

طاقتي تأتي من حاجتي شبه الغريزية للجمال و التعبير

بالنسبة للظروف الحالية في سوريا و منذ عدة سنوات، هل أثّرَ هذا على عملك؟ ماذا تغير ؟

الكارثة الحقيقية هي خسارة الحضارة، هذه الخسارة هي ما تدفعني لأكمل مشواري كفنان… أعبر عن هذا من خلال عدة
أعمال تتحدث عن الهوية : ” رسائل” ” أيقونة أنثوية” “القافلة” ” بشر في فقاعات” و “حرية التعبير”

أنت تعيش خارج سوريا، هل أثّر بلد أو مدينة إقامتك على إنتاجك الفني؟

المفروض انها أثرت، لكن لا أدري كيف تماماً…أستطيع القول أن تغيير المحيط، التعرف على مجتمع آخر و تعلم لغة جديدة قد ساعد ذهني على الانفتاح و التحرر الفكري، على تقبل أيدلوجييات مخلفة، أفكار جديدة و قوميات مختلفة… تغيير المحيط و المجتمع أعطاني الفرصة لأتعمق في الانسانية و أؤمن بها.

 ما هي أحلامك و أمنياتك، كفنان بشكل عامّ و كفنان سوري بشكل خاصّ؟

أعيش آمالي و أحلامي من خلال منحوتاتي و لوحاتي، الحلم و العمل الفني كيان واحد.
