What is your relationship to your studio? What does your studio represent to you? How do you feel when you are in your studio?
The studio is the place where I can isolate myself and take a distance with everything but myself. It is a space in which I can confess loads of my feelings and freed myself from emotional turbulence ‒ and also where my heart can long for something deeper than my daily experiences.
To work in my studio is a way to express the impacts of what is happening around me and of what affects me ‒ and inside this microcosm to transcript my life experience in a unique perspective, into lines and colours.
Do the layout, the organization and the location of your studio have an influence on the creation of your works? What role do that space, time and solitude have on your work?
To be honest I am not much organised, and sometimes I almost loose myself in the studio. But when the disorder becomes too much overwhelming, I bring order, and from times to times I even happen to find some old works or tools that I had lost, and then it is like a chance to start anew, to strengthen and restructure my ideas for some future artworks.
Ideas and the way of seeing life change as time is passing by, but changing one’s place of work, for instance, has obviously a big influence both on the ideas and on the quality of the work. When an artist’s studio is transferred in another location, the atmosphere and facilities change, and so do, directly or indirectly, the artistic process and productivity, as well as the results.
Do you listen to music in your studio? Do you work better with some music in your ear or do you need complete silence when you are at your most creative?
Music is essential to me. I always listen to music while working. Music is important to my daily routine and flow because it helps me pace my work and keep me focused. What has occurred over time is that with the right music I can literally transport myself to a place of high emotionality and creativity every single time – all it takes is the music to bring me to that literal place in the core of my paintings and things begin firing into creation.
Music moves my soul and it is rooted in the principle of work and pleasure – when the two are combined I create something altogether and entirely different. Music allows this dynamic to occur and that is why I use it, with abandon, in my workflow and creativity cycle. The only moment where there is silence in my studio is when the music stops playing and I do not have paid attention because turned inward and concentrated on my work.
What are your artistic practice and your working process? Do you plan?
The process is quite simple: I put the canvas in front of me and I leave it to transport me inside it, I surrender myself to it and wait until it takes me wherever it wants to. Usually I start by drawing some portraits, and then I take off some figures and add other ones. I keep going this way till arriving to such a stage where the painting communicates enough with me and expresses my feelings. I try to be satisfied at the end looking at the artwork like a spectator would do in an exhibition, a spectator who stops and looks deeply at an expressive painting.
What your art is about?
My art expresses what occupies my mind and feeds my soul ‒ like any other artist who attempts to express his emotions through a media he loves.
Each person has his own subjective way to approach and appreciate a work of art or a painting, and that is the magical thing about art: while the creative process belongs to the artist, emotions and reactions belong to the spectator.
I never give a title to my paintings, for I do not want to limit others or to put any borders ‒ my art aims to give space for imagination and free emotions depending on the life experience of each one. Apart from that I find it difficult and restrictive to give names to emotions, dreams, and experiences I may express through my paintings.
What inspires you?
Anything beautiful in this life that can light up inspiration in me, anything of substance, and anything thought-provoking that can lead to reflective thinking: a view, a photo or even a conversation…
How much satisfaction do you get in response of your work?
Satisfaction is a very relative issue; it changes according to the work and the period of time. There are many of my paintings that I really do love and which give me a sense of full satisfaction, meanwhile there are some others for which I still have some doubts.
Of course while a recent artwork explains more about my actual “me”, since it contains my present imprint and a piece of my life in the background, some of my older artworks appear to be less satisfying to me nowadays. That might prove of my personal and artistic evolution. At the end each artwork gets a distinguished personality and emphasizes the human artistic expression within a specific period of time and life experience.
If you are living outside of Syria, has the place you are living in changed your art?
Obviously the place where an artist lives has a major influence on his work and this on multiple levels: the atmosphere, the environment, the people, and the daily life ‒ all of these factors contribute to the evolution of an artist’s personality and the elevation of the creative process.
My presence in Dubai changed my way of seeing art in general and most specifically my own work. I had the opportunity to encounter many great Syrian and international artists, and this participated undoubtedly in my evolution as a young artist. Intrinsically each society might be able to construct some borders and walls, and liberate itself from other societies, yet the specific cultural character of each country influences the artist’s personal experience and so his artistic momentum.
What are your hopes and dreams for yourself as an artist and especially as a Syrian artist?
My dream is to be able to express my ideas and my feelings in an academic and artistic way, making it easier to touch others and release in them vibrant emotions.
As a Syrian artist, my dream is that the rest of the world would open their eyes and consider the Syrian people in a different way ‒ not like a people suffering and dispersed by the war, but to see Syrians as they really are: educated and creative people, able to be successful in all fields and anywhere.

١- ما علاقتك مع الاستوديو؟ ماذا تمثل لك هذه الورشة الفنية؟ و ما هو إحساسك عندما تكون داخلها؟
– الاستوديو هو مكان عزلتي، عزلتي عن كل شيء إلا عن نفسي، في هذا المكان أبوح بكل شيء و أفرغ حقائبي و مشاعري و كل ما أثر بي او أضاف لي خبرة؛ المكان و الزمان، المحيط و الناس… كل ما ينعكس على عملي بشكلٍ دائم. دخولي الى الورشة هو بشكلٍ ما تفريغ لكل ما يحصل حولي و ما يؤثر على أحاسيسي.
٢-هل تنظيم او فوضوية الورشة تؤثر على عملك؟ هل محيط الورشة، مكانها و المسافة بينها و بين مكان إقامتك تؤثر على نتائج عملك؟ ما هو دور هذا المكان و الوحدة و الوقت في فنك؟
– بصراحة أنا فوضوية لحدٍ ما، لدرجة أني قد لا أجد نفسي في الاستوديو، عندما تصل الفوضوية الى هذا الحد أعاود الترتيب و التنظيم، و في بعض الأحيان أجد أعمالاً او أدوات كانت منسيّة، فأعيد تنظيم أفكاري للأعمال المقبلة.
مع الوقت تتغير الأفكار و طريقة النظر للأمور بالحياة، و لكن تغيير مكان الحياة يلعب دوراً كبيراً أيضاً، لأنّ المحيط يتغيّر و حتى طريقة و أدوات العمل تختلف، و أكيد كل هذا له انعكاس لا ريب فيه على نوعية العمل، طريقة الانتاج و على الأفكار الفنية بشكل مباشر أو لا مباشر.
٣-هل تستمع الى الموسيقى في ورشة عملك؟ هل تفضل العمل في السكون ام ان نوع الموسيقى التي قد تسمعها قد تؤثّر على ابداعك؟
الموسيقي بالنسبة لي شيء أساسي، أسمع دائماً الموسيقى خلال العمل. قد لا أعرف كيف أصف هذا التأثير، لكن مزاجي مرتبط بالموسيقى، فهي قادرة على أخذي من مكاني الحالي إلى رحلة داخل اللوحة في زمانها و مكانها و الأحاسيس التي تعبر عنها. ربما الوقت الوحيد في الاستوديو الذي أعمل فيه بسكون مطلق، هو عندما تنتهي الموسيقى بدون أن انتبه بسبب تركيزي على العمل.
٤- ما هي طريقة عملك و خطواته؟ هل تخطط لفكرة معينة ام تترك الفكرة تأتي وحدها من خلال العمل؟
خطة العمل بسيطة: أضع اللوحة أمامي و أتركها تحملني معها، أنتظر أن تأخذني إلى حيث تريد. أبدأ عادة برسم البورتريهات، ثم أضيف شخصيات و أُلغي غيرها… أستمر على هذا النحو حتى أصل إلى مرحلة تتواصل معي اللوحة و تعبر لي عن مشاعر معينة،
أحاول الوصول الى درجة أصبح فيها كأي متفرج في معرض فني توقف عند لوحة تعجبه.
٥-عن ماذا يريد ان يعبّر فنك؟
فنّي يعبر عن ما يشغلني فكرياً، كأي شخص يفرغ أحاسيسه و أفكاره من خلال شيء يحبه.
كل شخص له نظرته الى العمل الفني، بحسب ما يوحي له العمل، و هذا ما هو جميل في الفن؛ الانتاج للفنان و لكن الأحاسيس بالنظر للفن مختلفة من شخصٍ لآخر. لا أحصر المتفرج بعنوان لوحة، فكرتي المعبرة بالرسم لا يجب ان ترسم حدوداً بل أن تترك للآخرين مجالاً في التعمق و الخيال و الحسّ بالعمل بحسب المشاعر و التجارب الشخصية. بكل الحالات من الصعب بالنسبة لي أن أعطي أسماء لمشاعر، لآمال، لتجارب استطعت التعبير عنها بفضل ريشتي.
٦- إلى أيّ مدى أنت راضٍ عن إنتاجك الفني؟
الرضا عن النفس موضوع نسبي، يختلف من عمل لآخر و من فترة لأُخرى؛ هنالك أعمال أحبها كثيراً و راضية عنها كل الرضا، و أعمال أخرى تُبقي في داخلي بعض الشكوك… من الطبيعي أن أعمالي الحديثة تعبر أكثر عني كإنسانة مع مشاعري و تجاربي حالياً، بينما بعض الأعمال القديمة لا ترضيني حالياً و هذا دليل تطور فني و شخصيتي. في النهاية كل عمل له شخصيته و يعبر عن فترة إنسانية معينة.
٧- أنت تعيش خارج سوريا، هل أثّر بلد أو مدينة إقامتك على إنتاجك الفني؟
طبعاً المكان و المحيط لهم دور مهم في التأثير على الفنان و عمله، الجوّ، الناس حولنا، الحياة اليومية، كل هذا ينعكس على الفنان. وجودي في دبيّ غيّر طريقة نظري للفنّ بشكلٍ عام و لعملي بشكلٍ خاصّ… وجودي هنا أتاح لي الاطلاع على أعمال و معارض كبار الفنانين السوريين و العالميين. كل مجتمع نعيش فيه ممكن أن يفرض حواجز أو يحرر من حواجز، خصوصية كلّ بلد تنعكس على التجربة الشخصية و بالتالي على الانتاج الفني.
٨- ما هو مصدر أو مصادر إلهامك؟
أيّ شيء جميل بالحياة ممكن أن يكون مصدر إلهامي، و أيّ شي يثير الجدل بعقلي إذا كان منظر او حديث او صورة…
٩-ما هي أمنياتك، كفنان بشكل عامّ و كفنان سوري بشكل خاصّ؟
حُلمي أن أستطيع إيصال الفكرة و الاحساس بطريقة أكاديمية فنية تصل بسهولة للآخرين و تحرك فيهم مشاعر معينة.
بشكل خاص كفنانة سورية حلمي أن يرى العالم كل الشعب السوري بشكل آخر، ليس كشعبٍ معذب مشتت بالحروب، بل على حقيقته كشعب مثقف و منتج، خلاق و ناجح بكل ميادين الحياة.
