What is your relationship to your workplace? Does the location of your studio have an influence on the creation of your works?

About 60 kilometres from the city of Latakia there is a sacred place that is the source for my artistic inspirations: Mount Zaphon, also known as Djebel Al Aqra. It is there at the foot of the Zaphon that I collected from the seashore thousands of beautiful pebble-stones blessed with a stunning variation in colour and form, and transported them to my workplace to create ten thousands of sculptures. Mount Zaphon is known in Ugaritic texts to be the dwelling of Baal, god of the mountain, storm, and rain worshipped by ancient Syrian cultures. This place on earth is all my pride. Thus ‘Jabal Safoon’, which means Mount Zaphon, has now become my artist’s name.

Unfortunately each time I finish a stone sculpture I have to dismantle it, because affixing stones with special glue onto special supports has become far too expensive nowadays.

The only thing I can do at present time is taking photographs of my ephemeral artworks: this is my way to immortalize them.

So when I create a stone sculpture, I know with certainty that there is nothing there to hold it together. It will, undoubtedly, be destroyed in time, just like the Buddhist sand mandalas. Because of this, there is an ephemeral character inherent in my work that requires an ability to let go of attachment to material items and to understand the temporal nature of all things in life.

What role do that space, time and solitude have on your work?

I love being alone  ̶  for me, aloneness is something I choose, loneliness is the result of being alone, or feeling alone when I have not chosen it, but they are not the same, and they do not necessarily lead to one another.

I can stay for many days secluded in the solitude of what I call my ‘museum’, working, sculpting, and creating. Being alone makes me feel aligned and peaceful. My inspiration comes from my profound love for the Zaphon stones and for my homeland Syria.

Do you listen to music in your studio? Do you work better with some music in your ear or do you need complete silence when you are at your most creative?

I do not hear to music for the simple reason that I do not have electricity anymore. But it does not matter, I still continue to work and create as ever before.

Living without electrical power   ̶   e.g. without music   ̶   is a way to bring an individual feels more connected to nature and closer to his roots. My Ugarit ancestors who invented the alphabet still live in my genes. As I often feel guided and empowered by them, I think no other artist will be able to make works of Zaphon stones similar to mines. I have created more than ten thousand works of art and I continue to do so to prove to the world that the fierceness and determination of the Syrian people is supreme.

What are your artistic practice and your working process? What your art is about?

Creating and working with my hands has been a lifelong passion. When I was a child I used to collect small rocks and stones close to streams and creeks or by the seashore, and carved faces and animals out of them. Then I grew up and so the dream along with me: my dream to reach people’s hearts and deliver a message. As my passion for stone sculptures evolved, I heard the call and the cry of the stones.

The cries came out of the uterus of the holy Syrian land. The stones screamed so loudly that all resounded… the cries of the needy, the oppressed and the fugitives.

It is a cry against injustice, assassination and oppression. Designed from Zaphon stones, my works and my creations are unprecedented in this world. They gave birth to a cry: the cry of the stones, which demands the cessation of the massacre.

I am aware nowadays that my work is unrivalled as it started in recent times to reach the heart and the mind of many people around the world.

Being an artist is hard work. Do you have sometimes doubts and struggles?

I never have had a materialistic intention in my work, nor have I searched to earn money with it. The sole purpose of my art is to serve humanity. I am interested only in expressing basic human emotions   ̶   tragedy, love, doom, sorrow, hope, happiness and so on. And the fact that lots of people break down and are moved when confronted with my stone sculptures shows that I communicate those basic human emotions. The people who are affected by my sculptures are having the same spiritual experience I have had when I made them.

Although I am living in great poverty as a result of the war, I am a wealthy man, rich of my artistic creations.

Do you ever regret becoming an artist? Where does your energy come from?

During all those years where I have been working on hard stones, I never ever have sold any of my sculptures. My only aim is to collect my works of art for my ‘museum’ to be seen later on by next generations. As a legacy I will endow everything to my homeland Syria and donate it to the Suns of Martyrs who protected our country.

How much satisfaction do you get in response of your work?

I am a Syrian sculptor from Ugarit   ̶   my ancestors left a signature in my genes that is to create and share my work with honesty and modesty. My human message is the spreading of happiness, amity and love. Inside of the war, destruction, death, migration, exodus, chaos, poverty, injustice, there are screams and yells of human beings as pain and suffering gripped them. Through my creations one can hear the stones screaming and yelling in desperate imploring: “Stop killing human beings, stop destruction, do not abandon your humanity!”

Has the conflict that is raging in Syria since a few years had an impact on the core element of your art? What has changed?

Syria is the country I was born in and I never thought of leaving it. I feel a deepest love for my homeland that is suffering from the appalling injustice inflicted upon it by alien global elites. How could I ever think of leaving Syria which gave to humanity the cuneiform alphabet? This world’s oldest writing is undoubtedly one of the most important developments that marked a pivotal change in humankind and history.

What are your hopes and dreams for yourself as an artist and especially as a Syrian artist?

I hope this war will end soon, and that the killing will stop. The heartrending agony that the poor people of Syria have endured, no one in the world can handle it. But just as the mythological bird is cyclically reborn from the ashes of its predecessor, I believe that beauty will be born again in Syria. The phoenix will fly once more, spread love and peace to the world, despite the destruction overpowering its magnificence, and so will the Syrian people.

-ما علاقتك مع مكان عملك؟  هل محيط الورشة و مكانها يؤثر على نتائج عملك؟

على بعد ٦٠ كم من مدينة اللاذقية هنالك جَبَل مقدس هو مصدر إلهامي . تحت أقدام صافون غسلت دهوراً حجارة غاية في الروعة بألوانها و أشكالها. جمعت الكثير من هذه الحجارة حملتها معي وشكلت منها أروع اللوحات.

للأسف الشديد بعد تشكيل العمل أخربه لأَنِّي لا أستطيع تحمل كلفة تثبيت الأعمال على الرخام.

طريقتي الوحيدة خالياً للحفاظ على هذه الاعمال المؤقتة هي تصويرها لتخليدها و مشاركتها مع الآخرين.

-ما هو دور هذا المكان و الوحدة و الوقت في فنك؟

أنا عاشق للوحدة، بالنسبة لي الوحدة خيار، أبقى أياماً في متحفي أعمل وأنحت وابدع.

 يأتيني الالهام من عشقي العميق لتراب وحجارة سورية.

-هل تستمع الى الموسيقى في ورشة عملك؟ هل تفضل العمل في السكون ام ان نوع الموسيقى التي قد تسمعها قد تؤثّر على ابداعك؟

 لا أسمع الموسيقى لعدم وجود الكهرباء، لكن المهم أنني أعمل و أُبدع متواصلاً مع الطبيعة حولي و مع جذوري.

أشعر أنه قد تمّ اختياري من أسلافي الاوغاريتيين، و هم من اخترعوا الأبجدية. لن يتمكن أحد في الكون من أن يبدع كما أبدعت، لأنّ للحجر أبجدية وأنا من حفظ هذه الأبجدية.

 -ما هي طريقة عملك و خطواته؟ و عن ماذا يريد ان يعبّر فنك؟

أعمالي النحتية بالحجر بدأت منذ طفولتي. شدّتني الطبيعة و عشقت حجارتها.

 كنت صغيراً أجمع الحجارة من السواقي وأشكل منها وجوه بشرية وحيوانات، ثمّ كبرتُ وكبر معي الحلم، حلمي بالوصول إلى قلوب البشرية وايصال رسالتي.

 وصلت رسالتي بأعمالي وتشكيلاتي بحجارة صافون الغير مسبوقة عالمياً.

– أن تكون فناناً هو شيء صعب في أيامنا هذه، هل لديك أحياناً شكوك أو حواجز نفسية؟

لم يكن هدفي في يوم من الايام من خلال فني مادياً أو الربح المالي. بل هو فقط هدف انساني. تعبيري عن المشاعر: الحب و الحزن، الألم و الأمل، الفرح و البهجة، من خلال الحجر يصل إلى الناس، بالتالي ربحي هو ما أستطيع توصيله من أحاسيس.

علماً انني فقير ولكني افتخر بأنني غني بإبداعاتي.

-هل ندمت يوماً على كونك فناناً محترفاً؟ و من أين تأتي طاقتك الفنية و حماسك للعمل؟

خلال السنين التي عملت بها بالنحت على أقسى أنواع الصخور، لم أبيع منها شيئا بل جمعتها حتى أصبح لدي متحفاً كاملاً تتباهى به الأجيال القادمة، لانني سأترك أعمالي هدية لسورية ولأبناء الشهداء الذين صانوا الارض.

-إلى أيّ مدى أنت راضٍ عن إنتاجك الفني؟

أنا النحّات السوري الاوغاريتي، لأسلافي الاوغاريتيين أمانة في جيناتي. أنشر ابداعاتي بكل صدق وأمانة.

رسالتي الانسانية هي  نشر المحبة والفرح. من بين الدمار والخراب والتهجير والفقر والاضطهاد والتهميش، كانت الصرخة

نعم صَرَخ الحجر بتشكيلاتي و أعمالي، و صرختُه تقول: أوقفوا القتل أيها البشر، أقفوا الدمار. لاتخلعوا ثوب انسانيتكم

-بالنسبة للظروف الحالية في سوريا و منذ عدة سنوات، هل أثّرَ هذا على عملك؟ ماذا تغير ؟ 

لم أفكّر في الهجرة أبداً من أرض مولدي، فأنا أعشق تراب بلدي و انتمائي لوطني الذي ظُلِم من قبل العالم أجمع.

كيف أتركُ سوريا و هي من قدمت للبشرية أبجديتها المسمارية و أنارت دروب التاريخ و الكون.

-ما هي أحلامك و أمنياتك، كفنان بشكل عامّ و كفنان سوري بشكل خاصّ؟

أتمنى أن تنتهي الحرب ، أن ينتهي القتل والتهجير. ما عاناه الفقراء السوريين لم يعانيه أحد بالكون. و لكني أعلم أنّ طائر الفينيق سينهض من بين الدمار، وسنبني سورية بالمحبة.
